Le Bonheur-Santisouk Cooperative

Borough of Plateau-Mont-Royal,
Montreal, in progress,  2023

Coopérative Le Bonheur-Santisouk was created by a group of immigrants from Laos in the mid-1980s. A haven of peace, greenery, and community life, the cooperative is located between the stone walls of the Carmelite Convent and the Canadian Pacific Railway. The cooperative’s outdoor spaces are cherished by the residents, who embellish and use them throughout the summer to garden and socialize with their neighbours. However, the various structures built by the residents over the years are getting old. A complete renovation is now necessary to breathe new life into this important outdoor living space.

Our project proposes to consolidate the central gathering area, revise and expand the English courtyards, and renovate the circulation areas. A wooden shelter will be rebuilt to accommodate community gatherings and the presence of a large mature tree. The English courtyards are being renovated and expanded so residents can make them their own and continue enjoying them. All pathways are also being upgraded. A new, warmer, and more welcoming paving surface is installed.
