Healing through culture and nature
Isuarsivik Regional Recovery Centre,
Kuujjuaq, in progress, 2023
- Children and family, Inuits and First Nations
Isuarsivik Regional Recovery Centre is located on a headland overlooking the Koksoak River with an unobstructed view of the landscape and the northern sky. The site bedrock is covered by a dense tundra vegetation and is colonized by several species of plants, mosses, and lichens. The local population currently uses the site for fishing and berry picking during the summer.
Healing through culture is central to the philosophy of the Centre. Therefore, several areas are provided to host activities and make outdoor living more enjoyable, thanks to fire rings, a wooden deck, tables, benches, and storage. Children are welcome in a small play area integrated into the heart of the project. This area includes various play equipment, a playhouse, and a musical instrument. Finally, a slide integrated into the terrace makes it more playful and inviting for young people.
